R2.2 Differences between the energy profiles for SN1 and SN2 reactions [HL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 9821 час назад
SN1 has 2 peaks and the reaction is shorter. The first peak is higher and broader than the second SN2 has only one broad peak.

R2.2 Why are alkanes kinetically stable but thermodynamically unstable? [SL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 2542 месяца назад
Well, they have a big Ea when reacting with oxygen and a big negative delta H too.
S3.1 Why are Si-Si bonds generally weaker than C-C bonds? [SL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 1682 месяца назад
Si is a bigger atom than carbon. Bigger atoms have longer bonds. So the bonding electrons are further from the pull of the nucleus. This weaker attraction makes a weaker bond. Even though Si has 10 more protons attracting the electrons than carbon does, Si also has 10 more electrons shielding the nucleus. Giving both atoms the same effective nuclear charge.
S1.1 Why does a Perfect Crystal at Zero Kelvin have Zero Entropy ? [HL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 3892 месяца назад
Entropy is a measure of disorder. A perfect crystal at O K has no energy (it is sill) and the highest order (perfect alignment of atoms). Music by soundcloud.com/russianhush
R3.4 Isotopic Tracers and Reaction Mechanisms [HL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 1222 месяца назад
Atoms can be "tagged" by using different isotopes of the same element. Since the atoms have the same number of protons and the same number of electrons, they will have the same chemical properties. Chemical properties are linked to electrostatic attraction. The different numbers of neutrons do not change the chemistry BUT make it possible to determine where specific atoms end up in the products.
S3.1.5 Reactions with water of the oxides of grp 1/2 metals, carbon and sulfur [SL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 1372 месяца назад
Alkali metals and alkaline earth metals form alkalies in water (hydroxides). Nonmetals form acidic oxides (such as CO2 dissolving in the seas producing carbonic acid that is dissolving the coral reefs)
S1.1.1 Can you Identify Atoms, Elements, Molecules, Compounds and Mixtures? [SL IB CHEMISTRY]
Просмотров 6713 месяца назад
Elements are the primary constituents of matter, which cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances. They are made of one type of atom (all with the same number of protons) Atoms are the smallest part of an element. Molecules are 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together. Compounds consist of atoms of different elements chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio. Mixtures contain ...

Maybe, but the chemical were many times more concentrated that those in foot sweat, so I would expect the time needed to turn brown to be shorter. A better experiment would be to use more realistic concentrations and 8 days then.

That's Japanese traffic light green, or at least is sensed that way by the camera. Most simple glass is actually green, even without any ultraviolet. But what makes glass Teal/Light Blue? Modern Pyrex is usually slightly blue. Turki-ye's GCA Kuvars jars are almost clear with a slight hint of blue.

Hello Mr Thornley, I wanted to give you a late but very well deserved thank you. I took Chemistry HL and finished the IB in 2022. During the DP I barely understood anything. As the final exams approached I found your channel. For the first time I was able to keep up; the videos were informative, in-depth, and entertaining. I binged all your videos and followed your advice. I went from getting 4s and hating chemistry to passing with a 6 and liking chemistry. All this to say, I appreciate the thought and hard work that you put into your videos. If only all teachers were like you.
